Kim Nak Kyun
This is Kim Nak Kyun. I am from South Korea and I came here studying at the University of Tasmania Sandy Bay campus. I am undertaking International First Year Diploma – Science at UTAS International Pathway College.
Why did you want to come to Australia?
I first came to Australia as a backpacker in 2005 to take a break from the busy city life in Seoul, South Korea. When I reached Tasmania, I fell in love with it immediately. The scenery, the nature—it’s just beautiful. And the people here are lovely, they really care for each other. Everything worked together, and it was the right place for me.
Why did you choose the University of Tasmania?
I wanted to pursue a degree in pharmacy because of the great career opportunities and the University of Tasmania’s Bachelor of Pharmacy had a near-100% employment rate. That was very attractive to me.
How did you prepare for pharmacy studies without a science background?
I didn’t study science in high school and needed to improve my English, so I enrolled in the University’s Foundation Studies Program. It was a bridging course for international students. It honed my English and gave me the science background I needed for pharmacy. I thought I was going to struggle, but my progress was surprisingly quick!
What was the most rewarding part of your degree?
The final two years. In third year, we started work placements, and that was fantastic. Real pharmacists came to tutorials, teaching us how to communicate with patients, and introducing practical skills. I could apply what I learned in class directly at work the next day.
What did you discover about yourself during placements?
I realised I wanted to work in community pharmacy rather than in a hospital. I love engaging with people, acknowledging patients by name, building relationships, and being involved in the community. That’s what inspires me.
How are the employment outcomes for pharmacy graduates?
Excellent. In 2022, 100% of pharmacy graduates at the University of Tasmania found full-time work within four months. Many start working in pharmacies during their studies, which really helps prepare for employment. There is a massive shortage of pharmacists in Australia, so getting a job is quite easy once you graduate.
What is your current role?
Today, I am the Pharmacist Manager at TerryWhite Chemmart in West Hobart. Now I am the one receiving applications from the next generation of graduates.
Why did you decide to stay in Tasmania?
The lifestyle is the biggest factor. South Korea is very busy and competitive, with limited work-life balance. In Tasmania, I can balance work with my own life—hobbies, family, and friends. That’s important both for study and for work performance.
